QuestionInsurance Question  If I have liability insurance on a vehicle that is totalled, will I be given a cash value for the car? The vehicle is paid for.

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

No, if you only have liability insurance your car would not be covered by your auto insurance provider. Liability insurance covers other people’s bodily injuries and property, not your own vehicle.

For you own vehicle to be covered you would need physical damage. It covers collision and comprehensive. For example collision coverages cover damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. It pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose.

If you were not at fault in the accident though then in most states you can place a claim through the at fault party's property damage liability coverage for your car which was declared a total loss. If this is the case then you would receive actual cash value (ACV) for your totaled out vehicle.
