QuestionInsurance Question  My car was parked out on the driveway and we had storms the night before which caused my son's basketball goal to fall right through the windshield? Do I have to pay a deductible?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It will depend upon state laws and your insurance company's guidelines if you will owe the deductible for getting your windshield replaced. Normally when a windshield is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced you would make a claim with your auto insurance company through the comprehensive portion of your physical damage coverage.

Comprehensive coverage comes with a deductible pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose usually. In some states there are statutes in place that require the deducible to be waived for windshields to be replaced or repaired so that drivers will do so in a timely matter and be able to see properly through their front glass.

To find out if your state waives the deductible for the windshield you can contact your state's insurance regulator. Sometimes even if the state does not waive the deductible the insurance company will decide waive it. To find out if your insurance company requires your deductible to be paid for the windshield damages ask your agent.
