QuestionInsurance Question  I live in MN and my husband owns a 12000 lb. dump truck. We would like to use it for a weekend or two and have been told we must have commercial insurance on it even though it is being used for personal use. Is this true or is my insurance company just looking for more money?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

This would not be handled under any personal auto policy because of the size of the vehicle. A dump truck is beyond the parameters set by car insurance companies for personal vehicles.

A dump truck is not a vehicle classified for personal use by insurers. Most personal policies contain an "Unacceptable Vehicle" clause. Under this clause it lists normally flatbed trucks, stake trucks, trucks with dual rear wheels, one (1) ton trucks, and dump trucks.

So while you may be making personal use of the dump truck it is too large to be considered a personal vehicle by insurance carriers and thus would need to be insured under a commercial policy and/or a business use policy.

The Minnesota insurance regulator may be able to provide you with more information on this topic.
