QuestionInsurance Question  I received a speeding ticket in Ohio in 2004 and paid the fine immediately. However, I resided in WV at that time and would like to know if the ticket was recorded in WV and how I can find this information. Also, when completing job applications, are paid speeding tickets considered convictions of moving violations?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

West Virginia and Ohio both take part in the Driver's License Compact meaning that the Ohio courts or Bureau of Motor Vehicles should have reported this speeding ticket to West Virginia's Division of Motor Vehicles.

The WV Division of Motor Vehicles has a point system to identify and control problem drivers and also maintains a record of all violations of traffic laws. Your record will show the date, nature of the violation and the court in which you were convicted no matter whether the offense happened in or out of state.

The WV driver's manual states that traffic violations you receive in other states will become part of the driver's WV driving record and on the WV DMV points violation page it notes that points are assessed for all traffic violations committed anywhere in the US. Drivers convicted of multiple offenses arising out of the same incident will be assessed only the points appropriate to the most serious offense.

In West Virginia points remain on your driving record for two years from the conviction date while the infraction itself remains on the driver's record for seven years.

To find out if this traffic ticket was placed on your WV driving record you may request a copy of your own driving record in person at any WV DMV branch office or by mail. For more information on how to obtain your driving record check with the WV DMV website or call them at 304-558-4444.

As for paying a fine for a speeding ticket, yes normally it means you are pleading guilty and are being convicted of the moving violation listed on the citation. So if a job application asked if you have been convicted of moving violations and you have plead guilty on a speeding ticket the answer would be yes.
