QuestionInsurance Question  I got a Maine speeding ticket but I have a New York State license. I have heard that I will not get a deduction in points for my license, is that correct? Will my insurance go up?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Maine and New York are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) meaning that the Maine traffic court or ME Bureau of Motor Vehicles will alert the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles that you have received speeding ticket.

The NYS DMV however has decided not to record out of state violations unless from Quebec or Ontario. The DMV also does not add points to your driving record for out of state traffic violations.

Points are not deducted for moving violations but normally points are accumulated. A speeding ticket in NY normally has points assessed anywhere from 3 to 11 points depending upon how many mph over the speed limit you were cited for. So a reduction in points is good while having points placed on your NYS driver's license is bad. Since out of state speeding tickets do not place points on a New York driver's license though this is not an issue.

With the Maine speeding ticket not being placed on your NYS driving record or being assigned DMV points it is doubtful that your insurance company would spot this out of state citation but not impossible. If they are made aware of the ME speeding violation then it would depend upon your insurance company's rating system if your rates would go up or not. You can find out about your insurer's rating system from your agent or the NYS Department of Insurance with whom rates must be filed with.
