QuestionInsurance Question  I was arrested over 2 years ago, was given a felony eluding ticket and had my license revoked. I do not have a vehicle, but need to get my driver's license. For my license to be reinstated in Colorado, what do I have to carry in the way of insurance? I live with my parents and would have access to their vehicles. Can I get my license without a SR22, or do I need the SR22 first?

According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, when your driving privilege is revoked after serving your restraint period you are allowed to reinstate your driving privilege and in most instances you must re-test (both written and drive) to be issued a new license.

In Colorado an SR22 is a rider to an insurance policy, in order to get your license back after having certain suspensions or revocations. To find out what specifically you must do to reinstate your Colorado driver's license that was revoked 2 years ago, and if it includes maintaining a SR-22, you will need to check with CO Division of Motor Vehicles.

If the SR-22 is needed the way that you "file" an SR22 is by going to an insurance agent and buying liability insurance and asking the agent for the SR22 form. Once the liability insurance and the SR22 have been bought, the form gets filed with the Motor Vehicle Division at 1881 Pierce Street in Lakewood, CO. You can bring it down yourself. Not all insurance companies have this form.

The form itself is not an insurance policy. The form is a guarantee by the insurance company that you will keep insurance in effect for a certain period. If you do not keep the SR22 current, the insurance company will notify the Motor Vehicle Division. Once the Motor Vehicle Division has been notified that the SR22 is no longer in effect, but is still required, Motor Vehicle will suspend your license for that reason alone.

The CO DMV should be able to tell you if you need the SR-22 and if it is required then you will likely need to obtain this before they will reinstate your driver's license. To get a quote for Colorado low cost car insurance click here.
