QuestionInsurance Question  What is PIP?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

PIP stands for Personal Injury Protection.

As our Coverage Definitions page states PIP normally covers within a policy's specified limits, the medical, hospital and funeral expenses of the insured, others in his vehicles and pedestrians struck by him. The basic coverage for the insured's own injuries on a first-party basis, without regard to fault.

Personal injury protection may also be called "no-fault" insurance in some states since the driver can use their own PIP policy no matter who was at fault in the accident. PIP coverage is only available in certain states.

Total payments covered by PIP are the limits indicated. That is the maximum amount that will be paid per person for any combination of covered expenses (some states offer limits and others set it to an amount like $10,000). Specific limits and coverages vary by state.

In most states, those covered by a PIP policy usually include:

  • Policyholder
  • Policyholder’s relatives in the same household
  • Passengers
  • Other authorized drivers
  • Policyholder and family members if they are injured while riding in someone else’s car or as a pedestrian when struck by another vehicle. (in some states)

As noted above the limits and coverages that a PIP policy will include vary by state so you can check with us for a quote and description of the any PIP insurance available in your area. In your state, our coverage page will define the specifics of PIP in your state.

If you have more questions regarding what personal injury protections limits and coverages are available to drivers in your state, contact your state's insurance regulator.
