QuestionInsurance Question  I saw an ad on TV for an auto insurance company that insures the car - not the driver. Can you tell me what insurance companies offer this?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

For most all insurance companies both the car being insured must be listed on the policy as well as the drivers, especially any licensed household drivers. The car type is a rating factor, as is the driver. The driver(s) have to be listed since their driving record is one of the main rating factors for most all auto insurance companies.

We are not familiar with the ad you have seen on TV for an insurance company that provides insurance for the car and not the driver. We are not aware of what insurance carriers would offer this for personal auto coverage.

Insurance companies’ guidelines, rating systems and rating factors may vary but in general the insurance carrier will want to know who is driving the vehicle(s) with any frequency. In general, this is one of the main risk factors used to determine the premium.

Perhaps the television advertisement was for a commercial policy (i.e. for a company who has a fleet of vehicles). Even with commercial policies though a list of possible drivers of the vehicles will usually need to be provided to the insurance provider.

Individual states normally have insurance laws that hold the owner of a vehicle responsible for carrying the proper amount of insurance - regardless of who is driving. So while the car needs insurance on it for registration, in most states the owner and other frequent drivers need to be listed on the policy for the insurer's underwriters to properly determine the risk factors and calculate the premiums properly.

If you are able to find out more from the commercial you have seen on TV please leave a comment to inform of us and so we can look into this insurer who insures the car and not the driver.
