QuestionInsurance Question  My car keys were stolen. I have to have my electronic locks changed/rekeyed on the vehicle. I called to file a claim and was told it is not covered under my comprehesnive insurance. Why?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Rekeying of a car due to lost or stolen keys is not normally covered by auto insurance. It is not normally a covered loss since the vehicle itself was not damaged which is what auto insurance covers.

We can tell you placing a claim for the locks being changed on a car is not a normal one typically listed as a peril in a comprehensive car insurance policy. We reiterate that car insurance coverage typically covers losses to the vehicle in terms of damages or the vehicle being stolen, not the key being lost or stolen.

Not all stolen items are covered by comprehensive coverages. New locks and keys are not normally covered neither are personal items stolen from a car. Items stolen out of a car may be covered by a homeowners or renter's insurance policy but are not typically covered by comprehensive coverage you have on your vehicle.

There may be some insurers that will cover changing a vehicle's locks but that would be up to that individual insurance company and their own guidelines and policy terms.
