QuestionInsurance Question  I have car insurance in Tennessee, but received a ticket in Alabama for failure to yield for an emergency vehicle (failure to move to the left lane when a police car was apprehending another driver on the right shoulder). Will this out of state ticket impact my insurance? I believe the ticket was wrongly issued, but will only contest it if it would cause my insurance to increase.

In 1997 Tennessee dropped out of the Drivers License Compact (DLC), an agreement that most state take part in and that requires party states to share information regarding moving violation convictions that happen out of state; however TN still reports tickets to other states and other states can still report moving violations to the TN Department of Safety.

So while the TN DMV does not note exactly which states report violation convictions back to them it is likely that Alabama courts will inform Tennessee of this citation if you plead guilty and are convicted. You will need to contact the TN state licensing agency to find out if the AL failure to move over offense will be placed on your TN your driving record and be assessed points.

If the Alabama moving violation conviction shows up your TN driving history, your insurance rates could be affected depending on your insurance company's rating system. You can contact your insurance carrier to find out about their rating system or contact your state's insurance regulator, with whom the insurance company must file their rates with.

You will need to make sure you take car of the Alabama ticket since Tennessee is a member of the Non-Resident Violator Compact. The compact is an agreement between states to ensure that a person receiving a citation for a traffic violation appears in court or otherwise complies with the terms of the court for the citation.

In a nutshell, this compact means that regardless of where you receive a citation for a traffic violation, you must either appear in court to answer the citation or meet any other requirement the court may set out to satisfy the citation. If you ignore the citation — whether it was issued for a traffic violation in Tennessee or in another member state, your driving privileges will be canceled or suspended.

The same consequences apply to non-residents who receive a citation in Tennessee and fail to answer the citation. The suspension remains in effect until the court notifies Tennessee that the citation has been properly disposed of and the proper fees are paid to this department.
