Yes, there are a couple of problems you will run into if you do not register and insure your vehicle in New York now that you have moved there.

One is that it is unlikely that your current North Carolina auto insurer will want to continue to insure your vehicle now that you have moved out of state and the car is garaged out of state for the full year or at least a majority of the year with you in NYC. If you did not inform your NC insurance provider of your move to NYC and were in and accident in NYC they may be able to deny a claim due to misrepresentation by you about where you and your car were residing.

A second issue is that according to New York laws once you move to NYS and become a resident you have 30 days to register your car in NYS. To register your vehicle you will need New York auto insurance.

The NYS DMV states that the liability coverage must be NYS insurance coverage, issued by a company authorized to do business in NYS and licensed by the NYS Insurance Department. Out-of-state insurance coverage of any type is NEVER acceptable or valid. Again, if your vehicle is registered in NYS, the liability insurance coverage must be NYS insurance coverage.
