QuestionInsurance Question  How many points does it take to suspend or take away a driver's license over traffic violations in the state of Nebraska? I have a speeding ticket from May 2006 and July 2007 in the state of Kentucky, and my third from Sep 2007 in the state of NE. Am I, at all, close to being in trouble with my license? And, how many points would I have accumulated with these tickets?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Nebraska and Kentucky are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) so Kentucky will report your speeding tickets you received and were convicted of there back to your home state of NE.

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles states that when convicted of a traffic violation in another state, points are assessed against a driving record as if the violation occurred in Nebraska. So the KY tickets from 2006 and 2007 both went on your NE driving record and were assessed points.

It will depend upon the rates of speed which you were cited and convicted for going in both Kentucky and Nebraska as to how many points you were assigned by the NE DMV.

The Nebraska Point System notes that points are assessed for speeding on the basis of miles per hour [MPH] over the posted speed limit and the type of road):

Business and Residential District speeding tickets

  • 1 thru 5 MPH - 1 point
  • Over 5 thru 10 MPH - 2 points
  • Over 10 MPH - 3 points

Country Roads / State Highways and Interstates

  • 1 thru 10 MPH - 1 point
  • Over 10 thru 15 - 2 points
  • Over 15 MPH - 3 points

Upon conviction of a violation, points are assessed to a driving record as of the date of violation. Convictions remain on the driving record for five (5) years. Accumulating 12 points in a two (2) year time period (counting from the last date of violation) causes automatic revocation of the operator’s license under the Nebraska Point System.

You will need to calculate how many points you have accumulated on your Nebraska driver's license for the in state and out of state speeding tickets. If you are unsure of how many miles per hour you were cited for or the type of roadway and want to find out your point total then you can contact the NE DMV for the a copy of your driving record.

To obtain a driving record, you must submit an application for copy of driving record to a DMV office. The application must be completed in full and must be submitted with the appropriate $3.00 fee for each record requested.
