QuestionInsurance Question  Why is it important to have car insurance and a license to drive?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

It is important for many reasons to have a valid driver's license to drive and auto insurance, one main one being that most all states require these items to legally operate a vehicle on the roadways.

All states require motorists to show financial responsibility when driving a motor vehicle. In most states this financial responsibility is proven by purchasing and maintaining at least the minimum required insurance required by their state. In many states there is a minimum amount of bodily injury and property damage liability insurance that must be in place before they can legally drive a car. Other states require even more insurance coverages.

In some states the proof of financial responsibility or insurance must be shown before registering their vehicle, while other states require you to have insurance and check up on you through surveys or will check for proof of insurance when the driver has been in an accident or stopped for a traffic incident and receives a ticket.

Auto insurance can help:

  • Protect your investment in your automobile
  • Pay for medical expenses in case of an accident
  • Provide financial protection from lawsuits
  • Cover losses caused by uninsured or underinsured drivers
  • Pay for damage due to theft, vandalism or natural disasters

There are many benefits if you obtain at least the state required auto insurance. With liability auto insurance you are protecting your assets by having insurance that will pay for the damages you cause others to their property or for their bodily injuries. Without the benefit of insurance covering these claims you would personally be responsible for these expenses.

A driver's license is important to have it you want to operate a motor vehicle. Not only is the license a main form of identification in the United States, it also shows that you have passed the necessary tests and are allowed to drive a vehicle. One needs to follow procedures set up by a state so that they gain experience, learn the rules of the road and are competent behind the wheel of an automobile.

Those that drive without drive without properly obtaining a license may times may not understand all the traffic laws and are more likely to then get into an accident which may damage other people's property and/or injury others. To find out about how to apply for a driver's license in your state contact your local DMV.

The penalties for driving without a license and driving without insurance vary from state to state. The penalties though are normally quite harsh ranging from a fine, car impoundment to imprisonment for a certain amount of time. Your DMV would be able to give you more information on this as well.
