QuestionInsurance Question  How long does a DUI affect your car insurance rates in Arizona?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

According to the Arizona Division of Motor Vehicles any convictions received and showing on your driving record within the past 39 months will be provided to an insurance company who requests a copy of your MVR.

A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is the computer printout of a driving or vehicle record. The manner in which an AZ driver license or motor vehicle record information may be released is regulated by the Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (or DPPA), 18 USC 2721-2725 and Title 28, Chapter 2, Article 5 of the Arizona Revised Statutes.

The DPPA requires you to have a "permissible use" for requesting and receiving an MVD record which contains personal identifying information (e.g., a person's driver license photograph/image, social security number, driver license number, name, address and medical/disability information). The Motor Vehicle Record Request form lists those permissible uses.

It will depend upon the look back period and rating system of your insurance company to determine how long your auto insurance rates will be affected by a DUI you were convicted of. If your insurance carrier can see the DUI on your MVR for 39 months then it will likely that you will have higher rates during this entire period.

Our system will give you specific rates and information on the insurance company's rating system. Once you purchase an underwriter can tell you how long your rates will be affected by the DUI. If your current rates are too high you may want to shop around for affordable auto insurance.
