QuestionInsurance Question  What does no soliciting of orders mean on my car insurance policy?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Soliciting in general is defined as selling, taking order, offering to sell or offering to take orders for merchandise, goods, wares, etc. So basically if your insurance policy has an exclusion for "soliciting of orders" then it usually means your insurance does not cover you if you use your vehicle while doing sales or sales calls.

So if you are a business person who uses your vehicle to drive for sales or soliciting for orders then your insurance would not cover you for business trips that you use your vehicle so you would need a different type of coverage for your vehicle.

Exact policy terms and insurance guidelines can differ so you should speak with your agent to find out what the "no soliciting of orders" means specifically on your policy.

In the UK the use of the vehicle is detailed on your motor insurance certificate so if a person is using a vehicle on a road outside of the description of use that the policyholder chose, they can be found guilty of driving without insurance.

Most insurers use the following categories:

Social Domestic and Pleasure Use. Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. This class is usually divided into two subcategories. One excludes while the other includes travel to and from a permanent place of business (commuting).

Class 1 - Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes (including commuting) and use by the policyholder (and spouse if entitled to drive) in connection with their business or profession, excluding use in connection with the motor trade, use for the soliciting of orders or renting out or use of the car for the carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward.

Class 2 - Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes (including commuting) and in connection with business or profession of the policyholder and authorized drivers. This type of policy normally excludes use in connection with the motor trade, use for soliciting of orders or renting out or use of the car for the carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward.

Class 3 - Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and in connection with the business or profession of the policyholder, excluding use for hire and reward but does include coverage for soliciting of orders.

Racing, racing, pacemaking reliability trial and /speed testing are all excluded under the above categories of UK motor insurance.

Other categories of use that motor insurance companies may have on an application for auto insurance may also include:

Carriage of Own Goods. Use in connection with policyholders business and social domestic and pleasure use. It has an exclusion for hire or reward.

Hire and Reward. Use in connection with policyholders business and social domestic and pleasure use. It excludes coverage for carriage of passengers for hire or reward.

Private Hire / Public Hire. Use in connection with policyholders business and social domestic and pleasure use excluding carriage of goods for hire or reward.

Agricultural and Forestry. Use for Agricultural and Forestry purposes and Use when hired for the purpose of driving stone crushing plant snow clearance or hauling material for spreading on roads to deal with Frost Ice or Snow, excluding carriage of passengers for hire or reward.

Motor Trade - Use for the purpose of the policyholders business as a Motor Trader and may cover use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes but one would need to check the policy terms since these may not be automatically included. This policy normally excludes the carriage of passengers but can be extended for one private hire vehicle and an exclusion for goods for hire or reward.

All the categories mentioned here also excluded coverages if the vehicle is used for racing, pacemaking reliability trial or speed testing.
