QuestionInsurance Question  On a Texas auto policy, if you have full coverage on your autos and you pull a travel trailer, do you have full coverage on it as well? Do you have to add the trailer to your policy?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Insurance companies and their policy terms differ as do state laws. So it varies within the insurance industry if a towed vehicle, such as a travel trailer is covered or not by a motor vehicle policy.

If you are driving a truck and pulling a trailer, the liability of the auto would extend for any damage caused by the trailer up to the limits and terms of the policy. The general rule is that if it is being pulled by a covered auto, it is covered as long as the covered auto has appropriate coverage.

An auto insurance policy may provide liability coverage while a towed vehicle, like your travel trailer, when it is attached or being towed. Full coverages of Other Than Collision (Comprehensive) and Collision would normally have to be added to provide coverage for any damage to the trailer, especially while the trailer is unattached.

Since insurance policy terms and carrier's guidelines differ regarding trailers of any type it is best to read through the terms of your specific Texas auto insurance policy and speak to your agent to see if your travel trailer would be covered under your current policy and if so with what coverages. For "full coverage" you will normally have to add the trailer onto your policy by having it listed on the declarations page of your policy to be covered.

If after you speak with your insurance provider if you have questions specific to Texas insurance policies then you can contact the Texas Department of Insurance for consumer help and advice.
