The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) does not state that minors cannot own, register and title a car in their name however in general when a person under the age of 18 wants to title a car in their name a parent or guardian must also be on the title with them.
We asked the IN BMV about the minimum age for being on a vehicle's title and their representative stated that the minimum age in the State of Indiana to be listed as a primary owner on a title is 18 years old. So no your son could not have the car titled only in his name while he is 17.You can see about putting his name on the title as secondary and not primary owner and then transfer the car completely into his name once he turns 18.
This is also true for insurance. Since an insurance policy is a legal contact insurance carriers require teenagers that are minors under the age of 18 to have a parent or guardian sign on with them.
So while your son may be able to title and get insurance in his own name at 17, you as a parent will normally still be liable for his actions and have to be both on his car's title and insurance policy until he becomes 18 and is no longer considered a minor.
