QuestionInsurance Question  I hold a CT drivers license and I received a ticket for going 70 mph in a 40 mph zone, on a non-limited access road in my area. The officer said that because of Connecticut's speeding laws, I need to appear in court in 2 weeks and they will set the amount. How much does this ticket usually cost?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

According to the State of Connecticut Judicial Branch site fine amounts are set by the judges of the CT Superior Court. The judges set a schedule of fines for all motor vehicle infractions and violations each year.

These fine schedules are printed in a pocket-size booklet, which is updated every October 1st. The booklet is available to the public in most public libraries, police departments, Department of Motor Vehicle offices, and in all Superior Court Clerk's Offices.

The judicial branch site notes that only a judge or magistrate has the authority to lower the amount of the fine and a speeding fine amount is based on the "charge," or statute.

If you were cited for 14-219(b), a speeding infraction, then it would appear from the fine schedule that we read that your fine would be about $211. If you were cited under a different Connecticut statute number then you should look at a fine schedule to find the speeding offense you were ticketed for. Either way to find out for certain what your total fine amount will be you should contact the court listed on your ticket to find out how much your particular court usually sets for speeding 30 mph over the limit on a non-limited access road.
