QuestionInsurance Question  In the state of Michigan, how many years do I have to wait, before I don't have to report my OWI to my insurance company?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

In Michigan alcohol violations, such as driving under the influence or operated under the influence of liquor, remains on your record for a minimum of 10 years. As for insurance rates, typically they will be affected for at least 3 years after you have been convicted of a DUI or OWI and some companies go back 7 years.

According to the Michigan Financial and Insurance services Insurance Eligibility fact sheet insurance companies can turn you down for auto insurance if within the past 3 years you have been found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Since your OWI should be on your MI driving record for a minimum of 10 years if an insurance company asks you about offenses in on your driving record or if you have been convicted of such an offense then you will need to inform them of your OWI conviction. If you do not and they later see it on your driving record then the quote amount you were given will likely be wrong since you did not give them all the information they required to give you an accurate rate quote.

Or if you fail to tell them about the OWI and your policy is started you may be denied claims or coverage once they realize you did not tell them about the OWI on the application when they requested your driving record information. This is called misrepresentation and in many states is a form of insurance fraud.

Most insurance companies request information, and rate on, the last 3, 5 or 7 years of your motor vehicle record (MVR).
