We contacted the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) to see about the minimum age at which a person can be the owner of a vehicle. Their representative responded that the state of NC does not have an age limit as to ownership of a vehicle as long as the owner can sign their name on the application of title. However a plate cannot be issued without proof of owner having liability insurance on the vehicle.
Insurance companies normally will require you to have a parent or guardian sign your insurance documents (contract) if you are under 18 years of age and thus still considered a minor in the eyes of the law.
You can contact the NC DOT to find out more information about being a minor who wants to own a car in only their name. There may be extra forms, etc to fill out or the need to have a parent involved if you want to own a car solely in your name at age 17. You can also contact the NC insurance regulator to see if there are any required extra measures you will need to take when applying and obtaining a car insurance policy in NC until you become 18 and are considered an adult.
