QuestionInsurance Question  In Oregon, if you buy a used vehicle do you have 72 hrs from the purchase date to get insurance and registration transferred? Also can you drive this vehicle in the mean time?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

There normally is not a grace period allowed for you to drive on the roadways in any state without out insurance on a vehicle. We did contact the Oregon DMV, the Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division, a branch of the Oregon Department of Transportation to make certain this was true in Oregon as in most other states. Their representative stated that any vehicle on the road in OR must be insured, there is no grace period.

As far as transfer of ownership, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to transfer without penalty. The DMV noted if you had more questions about your specific situation you should contact them. There is no toll free number to call but they have general information numbers set up, you would want to find the one that is closest to you to call. You can find these numbers on the Oregon DMV website.

Oregon's mandatory insurance law ORS 806.010 requires every driver to insure their vehicle. This Oregon law requires drivers to carry proof of liability insurance. The law also requires your insurance company to send you an insurance card that shows the effective date and expiration date of your policy.

Driving without liability insurance could result in fines, suspension of driving privileges, and impounding of your vehicle.

If a judge convicts you of driving uninsured, you will have to file proof of financial responsibility with the Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) for three years or face suspension of your license. This is in addition to any fines you must pay.

The DMV notes on its site that state laws even require you to provide proof of insurance prior to taking a drive test and during the course of certain vehicle-related transactions.

Whether you are trading in or trading up for a new vehicle, you have to insure it in most states. Car dealerships are likely to require you to have insurance for your new vehicle before you drive it off the lot. If you already have auto insurance, you can use that policy to temporarily cover your new vehicle but it is always wise to speak to your agent before picking up your "new" vehicle and let them know of the situation.

Oregon is like many states in that generally speaking you have 30 days to get your new (also meaning a used car but new to you) car registered and your title squared away.

If you got rid of a car when you bought this used car and thus want to transfer over the insurance from the old vehicle to the replacement vehicle then many insurance companies will cover you on your "new" vehicle for a period of time. That time can vary depending upon your insurance company's guidelines. It could be a few days up to a few weeks.

In this type of situation the insurance on the new vehicle would be the same as the old vehicle in this case. So if you dropped collision and comprehensive coverages on your old car and carry only liability than that is all that will carry over to your new car until you inform your insurance company of the change. If you are financing the new car, your lien holder will probably require you to add collision and comprehensive before you can complete the transaction.

If you do not have insurance that would transfer to this car or you are buying your first car, you will need to get an insurance policy on it before you can drive around town in this automobile. Get an affordable car insurance quote for Oregon here with us,
