United Services Automobile Association (USAA) does write auto insurance policies nationwide. USAA is the country's fourth largest auto insurer and fourth largest home insurance company. USAA was founded in Texas in the 1920s as a mutual association, so that military officers, who moved frequently, could obtain automobile insurance.
According to the USAA site, membership is a privilege earned by those in uniform and it's a privilege that can be handed down to their children. Those eligible to join the association include:
- Active duty officers and enlisted military personnel.
- Former spouses and adult children of USAA members.
- National Guard and Selected Reserve officers and enlisted personnel.
- Officer candidates in commissioning programs (Academy, ROTC, OCS/OTS).
- Former military personnel:
- Retired officers and enlisted personnel.
- Former officers and enlisted personnel who separated on or after 01/01/1996.
USAA provides more than 150 products and services including auto, homeowners and life insurance. USAA Insurance provides car insurance plans and benefits to not only serve those in the military who are based in the United States but also overseas. So they have not only nationwide auto insurance policies but also some overseas coverages.
