QuestionInsurance Question  A car was considered a total loss by an insurance company. The car has a new owner and different insurance company. The car was in an accident and someone else was at fault. Can the car be considered a total loss again by the different insurance company? If not, how do they figure how much to pay for your damages.

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Yes, a car can be found to be a total loss more than once. If the car was repaired and found to be roadworthy and was allowed back on the roadway by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles and then was in another accident where the repairs cost more than the value of the vehicle it would be found to be a total loss.

The car having a "branded" salvage or rebuilt title would already be worth less than before the first accident that totaled it out. When the car is totaled out a second time the condition of the car, its branded title, etc will be taken into account when its actual cash value (ACV) is now calculated. Keep in mind that if a car has a salvage or rebuilt title it is difficult to get physical damage coverages, collision and comprehensive, on that vehicle.

To figure out how much a car would be worth as a salvage vehicle that was in a second total loss accident, you could contact local auto dealerships to see what they would estimate the value of the vehicle to be.

Generally, a vehicle that has a salvage title can be worth thousands of dollars less than one that does not have a salvage title. Auto and insurance industry sources report that the decrease in value of a vehicle that has a rebuilt or salvage title is typically between 20 percent up to 50 percent depending on the type of vehicle and its age. So any settlement forĀ a car already totaled out once will show this diminished value.
