QuestionInsurance Question  I am a CDL driver and I got a ticket in New Mexico and live in Texas. Do these two states report to each other? Will Texas assess point towards my license from a ticket in another state? Thank you for your help.

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Texas and New Mexico are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) which means that TX and NM share information with other states regarding moving violations drivers were convicted of in court or by pleading guilty and paying the fine. So if you are convicted of the NM traffic ticket then the New Mexico courts will inform the Texas DPS.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) they will place out of state offenses onto a person's TX driving record. The Texas points system lists that it is 2 points for a moving violation conviction in Texas or that in another state. Points however are not assigned for speeding less than 10% over the posted limit or for seat belt convictions.

As a commercial driver license (CDL) holder you of course have even stricter rules regarding your license. For example it is federal law that you must notify your motor vehicle licensing agency within 30 days if you are convicted in any other jurisdiction of any traffic violation (except parking). This is true no matter what type of vehicle you were driving.
