This out of state ticket that you received in Toronto, Ontario, Canada may or may not affect your Illinois driving record.

The IL Secretary of State (SOS) keeps records of the traffic violations and accidents you accumulate while a resident of Illinois. If you are convicted of a traffic violation while driving in another state, the offense will be included on your record as though it happened in Illinois.

The Administrative Code Illinois Offense table explains that all out of state convictions will be considered and coded exactly as IL vehicle code violations with the exception of the first digit being an 8. So if this Toronto speeding tickets does go on your IL record it will also be assigned points.

We checked to see if this also holds true for tickets received out of the country, like in Canada, the Illinois SOS said that if they receive in the information it may be added to your driving record but the representative we contacted could not say for certain. Normally their procedure though is to include any out of state violations reported to them on your driving record though.

Now according to the information we were able to gather, all provinces in Canada have a reciprocal agreement with Ontario regarding moving violations. Some resources state that Ontario has agreements with 41 states, including Illinois. However we when we contacted the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), they stated that their current reciprocal agreements are with Michigan and New York, a deal may be worked out with Florida soon.

The Ontario courts or MTO share Ontario traffic tickets with Michigan and New York. She said they may still inform licensing agencies of other states that were not reciprocal states but she could not confirm if it was done regularly for any states other than MI and NY.

So there is the possibility that the Ontario courts or MTO would inform the IL SOS of this Toronto speeding offense. If they do then it may appear on your driving record. We would suggest that you ask the Ontario court when you take care of your ticket if your home state of Illinois will be informed of this citation and conviction or not.

If they will report the speeding offense to Illinois then check with your local IL SOS licensing office to see if a representative there can give you more information than the one we spoke with about if this offense could be put on your motor vehicle record (MVR) and thus be seen by your insurance company or others that may pull your record.
