QuestionInsurance Question  I was in between insurance companies and was involved in a self accident, I believe my vehicle is totaled will GAP assist me?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

No, your GAP insurance will not assist you by paying out on a claim if you do not have primary insurance in place to pay the actual cash value (ACV) of your vehicle if it is a total loss.

If you were involved in a single car accident that was your fault then there is no third party to place a claim with and if you did not have physical damage coverages of collision and comprehensive on your vehicle then you cannot make a first party claim through your own insurance policy.

Gap insurance is in place to pay the difference between the ACV paid out by your primary insurance provider and the balance of your loan or lease. Without the ACV being paid out the GAP insurance company does not have the "gap" to pay, instead you have the full balance of the loan and gap insurance will not pay that amount.

If your car is not totaled and you are able to pay for the repairs to get it back on the roadway make sure to get insurance on it. You can get instant car insurance quotes here with us.

Be aware that in many states there are severe penalties for driving without insurance and for having a lapse in insurance. At least a few states will suspend your driver's license and/or vehicle's registration for a lapse in auto insurance if the Department of Motor Vehicles is informed of the lapse. If your car is totaled you will want to turn in the registration and plates since this can help stop any extra penalties from mounting due to a lapse in insurance.
