QuestionInsurance Question  If have points on Michigan license and I move from MI to Arizona and get an AZ licence will the points go on my record in Arizona?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

The representative we contacted at the Motor Vehicles Division of the Arizona DOT stated that as long as any tickets you had received in your previous state of Michigan were taken care of then they should not keep you from getting an AZ driver's license. He also noted that neither the violations nor points will be put on your Arizona driving record for previous offenses in Michigan that were on that motor vehicle record.

The representative did say though to get an Arizona license you will need to bring a birth certificate since they only accept a Michigan license as a second form of identification and not a primary form of ID. You will need to take a vision test to obtain your AZ license but not a driving test.

According to the AZ MVD regarding new residents, state law requires that you obtain a driver license and registration immediately if any one of the following applies. If you:

  • Work in Arizona (other than for seasonal agricultural work)
  • Place children in school without paying the tuition rate of a nonresident
  • Have a business with an office in Arizona, and that bases and operates vehicles in this state
  • Obtain a state license or pay school tuition fees at the same rate as an Arizona resident
  • Have a business that operates vehicles to transport goods or passengers within Arizona
  • Remain in Arizona for a total of 7 months or more during any calendar year, regardless of your permanent residence

When you buy a vehicle, Arizona law requires that you apply for a title within 15 days of purchase. If your vehicle was registered in another state and you wish to operate it in Arizona, you must register it here as soon as you become an Arizona resident. When registering a car in AZ you will need to follow various steps including getting a physical inspection of your car and emissions test and show proof of insurance.

Arizona requires that every motor vehicle operated on our roadways be covered by one of the statutory forms of financial responsibility, more commonly called liability insurance, through a company that is authorized to do business in Arizona. This includes golf carts, motorcycles and mopeds. Minimum levels of financial responsibility are:

  • $15,000 bodily injury liability for one person and $30,000 for two or more persons
  • $10,000 property damage liability

Law enforcement officers will ask you for proof of insurance at the time of traffic stops or accidents. Insurance companies notify MVD of all policy cancellations, non-renewals, and new policies. If your insurance company sends MVD a notice that your policy is no longer active, they will send you an inquiry notice to verify insurance status.
