QuestionInsurance Question  I live in Virginia and got a impeding traffic ticket in Michigan which is $150 fine with no points attached. If I don't pay will my VA license be suspended?

AnswerAuto Insurance Answer

Yes, it is very likely that your Virginia driver's license will be suspended if you fail to pay the Michigan traffic ticket. Though Michigan is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) that requires member states to inform the licensing state of a driver about out of state moving violation convictions they still have reciprocal agreements with most states. MI is also not part of the Non Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) but that does not mean Virginia will not be informed of your failure to pay the Michigan citation and take action against you.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles notes that a person's driver's license can be suspended if they fail to pay court fines, costs and fees at for traffic or criminal conviction.

One Michigan court mentions that if you have been issued a ticket for a civil infraction and do not respond in one of the four ways indicated on the citation than a default judgment will be issued against you by the court. This could result in your driver's license being suspended by the Secretary of State's office. You have 21 days from the date of the ticket to either pay it or schedule a hearing. If your license is suspended it will cost you an additional $25 to have it reinstated. This additional fee can only be paid to the district court. The court will give you a clearance form which you must take to the Secretary of State's office to lift the suspension.

So your driving privileges could also be suspended Michigan and Virginia both until you take care of this MI citation for impeding traffic. Michigan is not likely to forget about the ticket either. Most states will continue to hound you for payment and even send you to collections which could affect your credit.

If VA does not suspend your license now there is still the possibility of it happening at a later date. Suspended licenses are listed on the National Driver Registry (NDR) which all states check when a person applies for a license and also normally when a person goes to renew a license. So if your license in suspended in MI and it shows up on the NDR when you go to renew your license in Virginia than likely you will not be able to do so until this issue is taken care of.

We have heard from several people recently that had old out of state tickets they did not pay showing up on the NDR (due to the suspended license in the other state) and causing them to not be able to renew their license they have had in their current state for 10 years or more. So if you do not want to pay the Michigan ticket than you should see about fighting the citation or if there is the option of traffic school to dismiss it.
