According to the Louisiana Driver's Manual if you are a non-resident and possess a valid license issued by another state or country you are permitted to drive in LA for a period of 90 days.
You may want to get an International Driver Permit (IDP) from your home country of India before coming over to the US. The IDP basically translates your foreign-issued license to make it understandable to U.S. officials. It is however your valid Indian license that allows you to drive in Louisiana or other states so be sure to have it with you at all times that you operate a vehicle.
The IDP is helpful because it is written in several languages and verifies that you hold a valid license in your home country. From what we have read to obtain an IDP in India it appears that you can apply and pay the fee for the permit at Regional Transport Office in India.
You need to bring supporting documents of: valid driving license, attested copy of birth certificate, valid passport and visa, attested copy of address proof and two passport-size photographs. You must apply in person because you will be interviewed and need to pass an international road signs test. It typically takes two working days to process the application. You will need to check to see how long the IDP is good for; once it expires you will need to apply again.
The Indian Automobile Associations are also authorized to issue IDPs to their members. Our Learning Center can give you more information you might find helpful for your visit to the U.S.
If you need more information on Louisiana laws regarding foreign or international licensed drivers contact the LA Department of Public Safety (DPS). If you are going to be here for more than 90 days than the DPS could tell you what you will need to do in order to be able to continue to drive in their state.
