Most classic car insurance providers do require that if they insure your 1950 Ford Skyliner that it would have to be kept in a locked garage.
For our Classic Car customers we currently work with Safeco. Safeco states that as part of their eligibility requirements to obtain a classic car insurance policy that when the vehicle is not in use, it must be stored in a fully enclosed, locking garage or storage facility.
So while we do not have any anyone else that can currently to insure your 1959 Ford vehicle we would advise you to shop around with agents that sell Classic Car Insurance. Some notable companies that deal with classic cars include: Haggerty, Leland West, Dairyland, or American Modern. We have seen the eligibility requirements for Haggerty and Leland West and both also require you to keep the vehicle in a locked garage when it is not in use however maybe you have better luck with the other insurers we mentioned.
If none of these insurers can meet your needs due to you not being able to have your Ford Skyliner in a locked garage than you should contact your state's insurance regulator to get consumer advice on what insurer in your state may be able to fulfill your insurance needs for this classic vehicle.
As you know for a classic car insurance policy one requirement is usually that when your vehicle is not in use, it must be kept in a fully enclosed and locked garage. Zip up garages and covered vehicles kept outside are not acceptable as being a garaged auto.
To keep collector rates low, most insurers will also place other usage restrictions on classic vehicles, such as:
- it cannot be used for everyday driving;
- cannot be driven more than 2,500 miles per year (though some will up the mileage limit to 5,000 for a slightly higher premium);
- principal owner and driver to have a minimum amount of years of driving experience; and
- a good driving record.
Other restrictions or limitations could be that all drivers need to be over 25 years old and you must show proof that all licensed household drivers have a regular-use vehicle to use for daily driving. Applicants must also maintain regular-use insurance in his or her own name for these other vehicles.
Classic or collector car insurance typically cost less than standard auto insurance, the reason is that there are many eligibility rules connected with obtaining this type of policy. Since collector vehicles are driven on a limited basis and spend most of their time in the garage or storage the risk of loss to classic collector vehicles is much lower than the risk posed to insurers by regularly-driven vehicles and so lower rates are applied if the owner is eligible for the coverage.
