How do I obtain a list of New York state insurance codes?

Question:  How can I obtain a numerical list of the New York state insurance codes?  Accident reports only contain the code; a list would be most helpful in distinguishing the numerous carriers.

Answer:  Police use insurance codes to identify the insurance companies of drivers involved in an accident.

You can go to the website of the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) for a comprehensive list of New York insurance codes.  With New York accident reports typically only listing the insurance code, instead of the name of the insurance company, you must use the DFS site to find the car insurance company of the other driver.

In 2011, the New York Insurance Department and New York Banking Department were consolidated to form the Department of Financial Services. This now makes the DFS the insurance regulator for the state of New York.

The DFS refers to the three-digit code on New York accident reports as the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) number or DMV code. There are over 700 DMV numbers currently, so it’s quite the list.

The New York DFS has a page devoted to DMV insurance codes and company contact information.  Here, toward the bottom of the page, the DFS breaks down the DMV numbers by range and also by company name.

The breakdown by range of DMV numbers is very helpful compared with scrolling through a list of hundreds of numbers.  Or if you know the name of an insurance company but not their DMV code, the DFS site also allows you to search for the DMV number by company name.

The DFS DMV code and company name listings contain, for every insurance company, the following information:

  • DMV number
  • National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) number,
  • company name,
  • whom you should contact for claims (claims department, etc.),
  • phone number,
  • street address (including city/state/ZIP).

If a computer is not available to you when you need to match a DMV insurance code number listed on an accident report with the name of the insurance company, you may also call the insurance hotline of the DFS at 212-480-6400 or 1-800-342-3736 to obtain the name and address of the car insurance company in question.
