THE cost of car insurance has shot up by more than 5pc in a year with drivers aged between 40 and 50 seeing their premiums rise the most, by 7 pc on average.
Although middle-aged motorists were hit hardest, the under-25s are not far behind with an increase of 6.6 pc on the previous year.
Not surprisingly, younger drivers pay the most for their car insurance a whopping Pounds 1,256 on average.
The figures come from research by independent analyst Consumer Intelligence on behalf of Sainsbury's car insurance. They show the average premium for motorists is nearly Pounds 500 compared with Pounds 472 a year ago.
Men pay more for their car insurance than women with the average premium costing Pounds 525 compared with Pounds 453.
This may be because some insurers tailor their policies to women such as Sheilas' Wheels and Diamond as women are statistically safer drivers than men.
These policies include features of interest to women: Sheilas' Wheels automatically covers the cost of a handbag stolen from your car for up to Pounds 300 and Pounds 200 for belongings.
Apart from comparing the price of policies, one way to reduce premiums is to buy insurance online. Most insurers offer discounts of up to 10 pc for online purchases.
