Anthony Dickson, president and chief executive officer of West Trenton-based New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co., , has retired after 17 years at the helm.
He will be replaced by Bernard Flynn, who was promoted from executive vice president and general counsel.
The change took place last Friday, company spokesman Patrick Breslin said Thursday.
Dickson "provided strong leadership," and "that dedication on the part of top management and our entire staff will surely continue," Flynn, 47, said in a statement. Flynn has been with the company since 1993.
Kenneth Merin, who was New Jersey's insurance commissioner in the 1980s, said Dickson "tried to do everything the right way. Tony always treated other people, employees and policyholders well. He treated them with dignity."
Dickson, 59, told the board about his plans to retire a year ago. The board selected Flynn to succeed Dickson in January, Breslin said.
Dickson, who joined the company in 1976 and rose through the ranks, remains on the board and continues to chair the company's wholly owned banking subsidiary. NJM Bank, first chartered in 1999, has about $400 million in assets and offices in West Trenton and Parsippany.
The privately held insurer provides auto insurance to qualified state employees and employees of companies that are members of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. New Jersey Manufacturers covered 787,284 vehicles in New Jersey as of Dec. 31, more than any other insurer.
Allstate Insurance Group was the top auto insurer in the state when measured by income from policy premiums, according to 2006 data from Best Data services.
New Jersey Manufacturers was by far the top workers compensation provider. The insurer wrote $490.6 million in premiums in 2006, a 24.4 percent market share. The second-largest workers comp underwriter, Liberty Mutual Insurance Cos., wrote $286.9 million, a 14.2 percent share.
New Jersey Manufacturers' main office is in West Trenton and branch offices operate in Parsippany and Hammonton. NJM is a private company, with the stock held in trust for the benefit of policyholders. The company said is has returned dividends to policyholders every year since 1918.
