BUYING cheaper car or home insurance can be a costly mistake. The cheapest policies often cut corners by giving you less cover - and a policy that doesn't pay out when you claim is worthless.
Many of us, for example, spend a small fortune on garden furniture, tools, sheds and greenhouses.
Comparison firm Moneysuper market.com says half of home insurers offer cover of pounds 500 or less for gardens, sheds and outhouses.
Some don't even cover fences, and they are costly to replace if they are storm-damaged.
Your car insurance, for example, may not pay out if you have an accident going to work if you failed to mention you commute by car.
Best policy is to decide what cover you need, shop around for the best price and check what it does and - more important - doesn't cover before buying.
Some comparison sites, such as Moneysupermarket.com, carry comments from customers about their claims experience. Insurance brokers can also tell you how good firms are at settling claims.
SAVINGS TIP: Always shop around before renewing. But if you're happy with your current provider see if they'll match a cheaper quote rather than lose your custom.
