Motorists who drive while drinking their early morning tea or coffee are putting lives at risk and jeopardising their licence, warns Swinton.
Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance, has seen a sharp increase in the number of incidents involving motorists drinking hot drinks, especially during the cold winter months.
American style travel coffee mugs are becoming increasingly popular, along with the growing use of takeaway drinks from coffee shops.
Swinton is warning that an accident caused by the driver who is distracted while drinking could be labelled as 'Driving without due care and attention', which is a criminal offence and could result in the motorist getting prosecuted or even disqualified.
Steve Chelton, Insure development manager for Swinton, said: "Drinking while driving can be a major distraction and dramatically increases the risk of having an accident. Tea and coffee drinks present an added danger as the hot temperature can scald the mouth or other parts of the body if it is spilt.
"Although most modern vehicles are fitted with cup holders, we would urge motorists not to drink hot drinks while driving."
