Even though it may be against the law, more drivers than you realize have no auto insurance. The Insurance Research Council reports that about one in seven at-fault drivers in a collision with another vehicle will be uninsured.According to Steve Cox, vice president of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, what happens to the insured victim after this type of accident can be upsetting and expensive....

Mar. 26--AUSTIN -- Drivers who carry the minimal liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage will be paying higher premiums for a higher level of mandated coverage that goes into effect next month. "We are estimating that your premiums will be going up 4 to 6 percent if you currently have the minimal liability coverage," said Jerry Hagins, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Insurance. Currently, drivers must be covered for at least $20,000 for each injured person in an accident up to a total of $40,000 for everyone injured in the accident and $15,000 for property damage....

Mar. 26--AUSTIN -- Texas drivers who carry the minimum amount of state-mandated liability coverage will need to buy more insurance beginning Tuesday, a reflection of higher-priced vehicles and rising medical costs. The Texas Department of Insurance said Tuesday that the new requirements will increase the liability cost of auto policies by 4 percent to 6 percent, adding $15 to $22 to the annual cost of an average Texas policy.
