Texas is an at-fault state. When an accident occurs, fault is assigned to the driver found to be at-fault and that insurance company pays damages, etc. as required by law.
Minimum coverage requirements outlined in car insurance laws in Texas were raised on April 1, 2008. The new liability limits required by law are:
$25,000 Bodily Injury Liability (per person) $50,000 Bodily Injury Liability (per accident) $25,000 Property Damage Liability
Insurance companies commonly refer to the Texas state minimum guidelines as 25/50/25 coverage. Texas car insurance laws do not require uninsured motorist coverage. However, uninsured motorist coverage is available in Texas.
Texas contains a wide variety of landscapes, and insurance rates vary greatly from one area of the state to another. Before moving to Texas be sure to find a representative from your insurance company in the zip code you'll be living in to help walk you through the process of switching your insurance over.
On October 1, 2008 Texas implemented the TexasSure program. All law enforcement vehicles will be able to see if a vehicle is insured by entering the license plate number into the police cruiser's on-board computer system. This is intended to put a stop to invalid or fake insurance cards.
