When you talk to your auto insurance agent, the first thing you should ask is, "Are there any other discounts I'm not getting that I could qualify for?" When you ask your agent ways to save money on car insurance, it lights a fire under your agent and lets your agent know that if he/she does not look up some more discounts you are going to start shopping around. No agent wants you to start shopping around, because now there are more discounts being added to every company and every policy and you are probably not getting the best rate you could get if you shopped around.

There is no need to scare your agent. Give your agent a few days to come up with a solution or, if your agent is independent, let them shop you around among the companies they represent. When you call and ask about discounts, give your agent a week to come up with some solutions. Call back in a week and ask if they found anything. If they did, great! If not, then it is time to get a copy of your declaration page and start shopping around. You may find you really do have the best rate available for your situation, but you may find there is a great policy out there for less than you are currently paying.
