What states have domestic partner auto insurance laws?
For states that recognize domestic partnerships, the need to enact separate domestic partner auto insurance laws has generally not existed. Car insurance companies offer domestic partner insurance coverage in these states based on the laws that created the benefits associated with a domestic partnership or civil union. California originally created domestic partnerships in 2000, but it wasn’t until the passage of a bill in 2003 that took affect in 2005 that domestic partnerships gained many of the benefits of marriage. The District of Columbia granted domestic partners insurance and other rights similar to marriage in 2006. Maine enacted their domestic partnership laws in 2006. Maryland created different domestic partnerships for same-sex and opposite-sex couples in 2008. New Jersey passed their domestic partnership legislation in 2006 for opposite-sex couples, and after a subsequent ruling by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, the legislature created a same-sex equivalent. Washington passed a domestic partnership bill in 2007. Oregon passed the Oregon Family Fairness Act in 2007, but a federal judge held back the law's enactment for a hearing on the legality of a petition drive to overturn the bill. The legislation went into effect in February of 2008. |
