Learn about Personal injury protection

Medical payments coverage and personal injury protection (PIP) cover your medical expenses and those of your passengers after an accident, up to your limits. Both pay regardless of fault. Both offer a death benefit if you are killed. If you have health insurance, MedPay and PIP can help pay the deductible. >>
MedPay is mandatory for drivers in Maine and those who buy insurance in New Hampshire. PIP is required in Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon and Utah. In most other states you are given the option of coverage. >>
In states where coverage is mandatory, you must buy at least the legal minimum amount. You should buy at least enough to cover your deductible, if you have health insurance, and a higher amount if you have no health coverage at all. In many states you can buy both MedPay and PIP. >>
Without these coverages, you must pay medical bills – or at least the deductible, if you have health insurance – from your own pocket if there is no insured driver to blame. You will have to pay expenses that are not covered under health insurance, such as a funeral or nursing home care. >>
