You do not want to have to replace them right away because it can be costly. Tire wear can also show if the car is out of alignment or has suspension problems.
Two - Inspect the interior of the car for any damage.Common indicators of wear and tear in a previously owned vehicle would include a dirty headliner, soiled seat cushions, torn up mats or cigarette burns. Cosmetic problems such as tears in the upholstery might mean that the rest of the car was run hard. If the interior is in pristine shape that should indicate that the owner took pride in the care of their car. If the interior is taken of it should indicate that the car is mechanically sound as well.
Three - Inspect the car mechanicallyHow well the car runs mechanically is the most important issue when buying a used car. You do not want to get a car that only has a few hundred miles left in the engine, transmission or any other vital mechanical parts. You can look over the engine compartment yourself. Many owners or dealers clean up the engine area so it may not be a true indication of the vehicle’s durability.
If you do not feel comfortable checking out the car mechanically ask if you can have your own mechanic inspect it. You will want him to check over the fluids, transmission, brakes, suspension and most importantly the engine. Ask him for a report of how it looks and sounds plus if he believes anything will need to be fixed in the next few, short months.
Four - Inspect the mileage of the car.Inspecting the mileage is more than just a look at the odometer. Use a company such as Carfax to do a detailed search on the vehicle’s vehicle identification number (VIN). Companies such as this will create a vehicle history report which you can purchase for a fair price. This vehicle history report will tell you who has previously owned the vehicle; if there were any accidents reported involving it and if there were any recalls. The report continues on to include a mileage accuracy check and warranty check. The mileage check allows you to know if there have been any reported odometer problems.
Five - Research the price.You do not want to pay too high of a price for a used car. It is previously owned with miles on it so you should not be paying the price you would pay for a new one. Use the Internet and other sources to find out what the fair market price is on the vehicle you want. You can go look up the car in a NADA guide or Kelley Blue Book as well as looking on sites such as Autotrader.com. Autotrader.com will show you what other used cars of that make and model are being sold at across the nation.
