New technological advances have allowed the transportation boards in many countries around the world allowing them to obtain and share information about the roadways with their citizens. The Intelligent Transportation System of America (ITSA) is the name of the United States branch of this organization that uses technology to help manage traffic flow and make travel safer.
The Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an international program that several countries such as Canada, U.S.A and Australia are part of. There is also a European branch. The ITS objective is to improve transportation safety and mobility while enhancing productivity through the use of advanced communications.
The ITSA consists of technologies designed to make transportation safer, more efficient, more reliable and more environmentally friendly, without necessarily having to physically alter existing infrastructure. The ITSA includes a large range of wireless and land based communication systems as well as electronic technologies. These are then integrated into the nation’s transportation systems’ infrastructure.
ITS in American is comprised of sixteen types of technology based systems. These types are then divided into thirteen intelligent infrastructure systems and three vehicle systems. Here is a list of those 16 items:

This large base of electronics plus technological advances are then used to make the roadways in the U.S. safer and easier to transverse. This is done by helping to relieve congestion, monitor and manage traffic flow and provide alternate route suggestions to motorists. All of these things enhance the efficiency of drivers as well as helping to save time, money and most importantly lives.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) bases its ITS program on the fundamental thought that intelligent vehicles and intelligent infrastructure combined with the creation of an intelligent transportation system will make the countries roadways easier to transverse as well as safer. The technology they utilize allows drivers to get message boards alerting them of congestion or accidents ahead and other up-to-date road information.
