Insurance broker Swinton has received record numbers of calls from customers as freezing temperatures continue to cause chaos on the UK's roads.
Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance, has taken its highest ever number of calls in the space of seven days from customers who have been involved in snow-related prangs and bumps, rivalled only by the record figure seen during the bitter cold winter of 1995/1996.
Swinton says the majority of accidents its customers are reporting are low-speed shunts and bumps and sliding out of control on black ice.
Swinton is advising drivers to only make journeys which are absolutely necessary, keep their speed down and allow extra braking time.
"At the end of January last year, freezing weather conditions meant we saw a significant hike in snow and ice-related accidents, however the number of customers contacting us in the last seven days has been even greater.
"While most of the accidents we're being contacted about are a result of low speed shunts and skids, the resulting small bumps and scratches can still have a big impact on car insurance premiums."
