Automobile insurance policies have several components, but there are two main parts that help you find the cheapest cars to insure.

One of the two main parts is the liability portion of a policy. It covers the possible costs you would incur if you harm (in an accident) some one's property, or their personal human body or other person’s human body, which might be riding in their vehicle. In other words, “your liability”; the word liability, in simple terminology, means “What I owe you because I harmed you or your property.”

It is a way we can purchase, relatively inexpensively, the ability to pay for your legal financial responsibility toward members of society, and their property.

Generally, the liability cost for a policy is the same, no matter what type of auto you are driving. Some policies may offer Property Damage Liability discounts based upon safety features on your car. Liability claims cost less when safety features are installed so the companies offer lower premiums for safer cars.

The second major portion of an auto policy is called “Comprehensive & Collision”, or “Physical Damage”.

This helps you understand what cars cost the cheapest. Insurance companies rate vehicle premiums for “Comp. & Collision” based upon what it costs to repair your auto at an authorized auto body shop.

Unless you are driving an exotic sports car, the comprehensive premiums typically will be a relatively fixed amount. So the savings you can achieve will be for the collision part of the policy. This is the part of the policy that pays to have your car repaired. If it is the other person’s fault in an accident, normally, his liability coverage will pay to repair your car, unless he is uninsured, then collision your coverage will pay to repair it, minus any deductible which you determine when you buy the policy.

In order to rate vehicles, insurance companies subscribe to a service, which determines a symbol called an “ISO symbol”. This service is from an organization called “International Organization for Standardization” The word ISO is not an acronym, but is the word for “equal” in the Greek language. They tell the insurance companies the ISO symbol and the companies assign a premium charge based upon that symbol.

Usually, the smaller, more inexpensive vehicles are the cheapest to repair and insure.

The higher symbol, typically the higher cost to repair your automobile. Another way to save premium dollars is to take a higher comprehensive and collision deductible. For example; take a $500 deductible rather than a $250 deductible, or compare the cost of the two.

Usually, it is not a good idea to buy a $1,000 deductible unless you have that amount of money specifically set aside in case of an accident. Other than listing thousands of cheap cars to insure, we can give this big piece of advice: The cheaper the car to purchase, the cheaper the insurance.
