Average annual mileage by state

CarInsurance.com

After six decades of unrelenting growth, the U.S. has experienced its eighth straight year of decline in miles driven.

Below you'll find average miles per person in each state and can see how that compares to the state's past traffic peak.

Per-person miles topped out in 2004 at 10,120 but have fallen steadily since then to 9,455 -- about where the typical driver was in 1995. Researchers at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group have analyzed the data and say it's not driven solely by the recession -- that there is a shift under way as younger generations especially reconsider their relationship with the car.

What's in it for you, besides slightly less traffic congestion than there would have been had growth continued unabated? Possibly car insurance discounts if your mileage falls below your insurer's threshold. (See "Should you get a low-mileage discount?")
