What determines if a vehicle is covered by your personal or business auto coverage?

I am uncertain if your question is how do you determine if your vehicle should be covered under a personal auto insurance policy or a business policy OR if your question is under which policy, your personal or business policy, should you make a claim if your vehicle was in an accident and covered by both types of policies. Due to this I will try to answer both questions.

If you are asking how to determine if your vehicle should be covered by a personal or business policy then in hopefully the following descriptions will help you. In general, personal use is the non-business use of a personal vehicle, including commuting to or from work or school. Business use is the use of a vehicle which is required by or primarily involved in the duties of the primary operator in his or her occupation, profession or business, other than going to or from work.

Because, there are variances and other eligibility clauses within these definitions that differ from insurance company to insurance company, you will need to ask your agent or insurance company for further help. If your vehicle is currently covered under a personal auto insurance policy but you use the vehicle for business or commercial use then likely you will need a business use policy. Make sure to discuss with your insurance agent how your car is used and best policy to cover it properly.

If you are instead asking which policy should cover a claim for a vehicle if it is covered by both a personal auto policy and a business auto policy at the same time, you will need to check with the two different policy guidelines. They will tell the two companies’ responsibilities at the time of an accident. Also, you may need to ask the two different insurance companies for clarification on whom to place a claim with.
