I have an international driver's licence. I am in New York and rarely use a car to go back and forth to my university. Is there any way that I can get insurance with my international licence?

In most cases you will need to have a valid U.S. license in order to purchase insurance. Some of our insurance companies allow you to purchase the policy with your International license and will give you time to obtain your U.S. license, typically 30 days.

Without getting a US driver's license it will be difficult to get US auto insurance since a US driving record is a main rating factor for most all auto insurance providers. So check with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) to see if you are able to obtain a NYS driver's license. With a NYS license you should be able to obtain car insurance.

If you own the car you can get a policy on your vehicle. If you do not own a vehicle but borrow other's vehicles occasionally then you can buy a non-owner's policy.
