I have an international driver's licence. I am in New York and rarely use a car to go back and forth to my university. Is there any way that I can get insurance with my international licence?

I used to have new jersey license it was expired. I can not be able to renew new jersey driver license now i have international license and a car is registered under my name when i had my NJ license. If i get stoped what would happen?
