Finding the best car insurance company for your needs and budget can sometimes be a challenge. The editorial experts at CarInsurance.com have put together the following ranking of best auto insurance companies to help ease the decision-making process.

We rated the best car insurance companies based on data from J.D. Power’s U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, A.M. Best credit ratings and National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint data.

We also assessed each company’s average premiums, the amount they raised rates for speeding tickets and at-fault accidents, and the amount insurers discounted car insurance when bundled with homeowners insurance.

What are the best car insurance companies in 2022?

Based on CarInsurance.com’s assessment of credit ratings, average premiums, discounts, customer experience and other factors, we found that Auto-Owners is the best car insurance company of 2022, with Erie, State Farm, Geico and Travelers rounding out the top five.

We also found USAA to be a top insurer, but since the company offers coverage only to military members, veterans and their families, we exclude it from our overall rankings.

Expert commentary: Best car insurance companies

CarInsurance.com spoke with experts Lauren McKenzie, an insurance broker/agent with A Plus Insurance and Mark Friedlander, director of corporate communications for the Insurance Information Institute about the best car insurance companies in 2022.

What are the key drivers of satisfaction for auto insurance customers?

McKenzie:

The key drivers of satisfaction for auto insurance customers are price, customer service, billing, claims and policy coverages. Most customers want to find a policy that covers what they need for a fair price. And, in the future, they do not want to hassle with poor customer service, billing problems or a slow/dissatisfying claims process.

Some customers may find out what is important too late, for instance, if they choose to go with a poorly rated but cheap insurance provider, they may experience problems down the line with either poor customer service, billing problems that create fees or cancellations, or even a poor claims process.

Friedlander:

The key drivers of auto insurance customer satisfaction include price, coverage options, discount programs, claims handling and exceptional customer service. It is also important for insurers to effectively communicate with their policyholders, such as informing them in advance of a premium increase, explaining why the cost of their policy is changing and promoting ways drivers can reduce their insurance costs.

What creates the most satisfying experience for the customer?

McKenzie:

When a customer calls looking for auto insurance coverage, they are expecting a professional to be able to advise them about coverage options and make suggestions when they are needed. A lot of customers are not familiar with the coverage, policy options, discounts available and the ins and outs of auto insurance.

It is the agent’s job to listen to the customer’s needs, explain coverage thoroughly and provide excellent customer service. Next, agents should go above and beyond to ensure they ask the customer questions that lead to discounts, such as auto-pay, continuous insurance, education, married, claims-free, driving programs and bundling discounts.

Friedlander:

We consider claims handling the most significant measurement of customer satisfaction for auto policyholders. Customers pay their premiums to be financially protected by their auto insurer and expect all phases of the claims process to be smooth, enabling them to get their vehicles repaired or replaced in an expedient fashion with minimal out-of-pocket costs.

Typical touchpoints of the auto claim process include filing the first notice of loss, estimation of repairs, rental vehicle experience, repair process and settlement. Providing 24/7 claims service via a live agent and/or an online portal is also a key measurement of the customer experience.

What are the key trends insurers must act on to better satisfy their customers?

McKenzie:

Insurance providers must always continue to grow and advance with modern-day technology. This means making their website user-friendly and simple for the customer to get their questions answered, such as quoting, policy questions and claims. Most insurance providers are offering a touch-free claims process where an insured can file a claim and take vehicle photos right on their phone to be submitted to the claims processor.

Friedlander: With auto insurance rates steadily rising across the U.S. as claims frequency and severity is increasing, it is more important than ever for auto insurers to offer their customers ways to reduce their premiums. In fact, a policyholder can potentially cut their auto insurance costs in half by taking advantage of multiple discounts offered by their carrier.

Insurers also need to offer their customers beneficial options like accident forgiveness. This allows the policyholder to have one at-fault accident that won’t trigger a multi-year premium surcharge.

What impact are digital channels and changing demographics having on insurers and their current processes with their customers?

McKenzie: Insurance companies are always advancing with their digital channels, such as making policy documents easier to understand and navigate, answering questions right on the website or offering a chat feature to talk with customers.

Some customers are busy and prefer a chat/text feature to get a quote and get an insurance policy within minutes, all with the help of a professional via chat. More than 50% of customers have purchased an auto insurance quote through an online chat or directly on the insurance company’s site.

Friedlander:

Insurers need to provide their customers with robust mobile apps to enable them to virtually manage all aspects of their auto insurance account. App functionality should provide drivers with the ability to pay their bills, access their insurance policies, get digital ID cards, file and track claims, review coverage options and request roadside assistance.

Mobile apps should also allow customers to easily participate in usage-based insurance (UBI) programs, which allows insurers to track a customer’s driving habits with the potential to provide them with significant premium savings. Consumer participation in telematics programs has grown steadily since the pandemic began in early 2020, with most national and many regional insurers now offering various types of UBI programs.

Which insurers are providing the best experiences for their customers and what are they doing to achieve that?

McKenzie:

Most large, well-known Insurance companies such as Farmers, Travelers, Progressive, Allstate, State Farm and Geico all have high ratings on A.M. Best in all categories. This is because they have recognized the importance of great customer service by providing their customers with an easy way to purchase and obtain auto insurance through online systems like chat or text features.

Customer service is always advancing, which consists of explaining coverages thoroughly, making suggestions where needed, finding an affordable price by applying all applicable auto insurance discounts and checking on customers throughout the years, not just at renewals.

Resources & Methodology

Methodology:

CarInsurance.com developed a scoring system that ranks insurers from 1 to 5 total points. The higher the score, the more competitive that company scored in each category.

CarInsurance.com’s editorial team reviewed J.D. Power’s U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, A.M. Best credit ratings, National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint data, average premiums, the amount insurance companies raised rates for speeding tickets and at-fault accidents, and the amount insurers discounted car insurance when bundled with homeowners insurance.

The editorial team then gave each data point a weight to come up with our rankings.
