Can I get insurance with an expired license?

It may be possible to obtain auto insurance with an expired driver's license but generally insurance companies will require a valid driver’s license in order for you to obtain insurance.

If your license is newly expired though and can be renewed shortly, within 30 to 45 days, then an insurance company may allow you to start a policy. If you can get an insurance carrier to start a policy in this manner then you will need to obtain you license within the given time period or the insurance policy will be canceled.

Alternatively, someone else (typically only spouse) may be able to get insurance on your vehicle and exclude you from the policy.
