North Carolina and Virginia are both members of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) meaning that the NC courts will inform the VA DMV about the out of state speeding ticket.
The VA Division of Motor Vehicles states that demerit points can be assigned to your driving record for traffic convictions occurring out of state.
In Virginia points for speeding violations are allocated as follows:
- 3 points - Speeding 1-9 mph above the posted speed limit
- 4 points - Speeding 10-19 mph above the posted speed limit
- 6 points - Speeding 20 mph or more above the posted speed limit and is considered reckless driving.
So if points are assessed it will be from the Virginia points list and not the North Carolina points list. The points in Virginia may be a bit different for your speeding offense since it was in a work zone. You can check with the VA DMV to find out for certain if you will have points placed on your VA license due to this NC speeding citation and if so then how many.
Virginia allows insurance companies to assign points on your insurance record as well but these point values are developed by individual insurance companies so you would have to contact your provider to see if this out of state speeding ticket will affect your premium.
